Time sure flies. You already know this! 1985 is now 40 years ago!
Some amazing films came out in that banner year!
My podcast partner put the spotlight on some of the more popular films in that year like: "Back To The Future", "Rocky IV", "The Goonies" & "The Breakfast Club"!
We also discussed:
"Witness" starring Harrison Ford & directed by Peter Weir. The first of two collaborations (followed a year later by "The Mosquito Coast").
"Vision Quest" Starring Matthew Modine. This cult classic "coming-of-age", sports drama that did OK at the box office and scored decent reviews at the time, but Madonna's song in the film, "Crazy For You" seemed to outshine the film itself! Thankfully time has been kind to this film and it seems to have a deeper appreciation 40 years later!
My Picks:
"Day Of The Dead" The third in George A. Romero's zombie saga. Even though the film made money, it didn't match the critical and financial success of the first two "Living Dead" films, but time has been kind to this film and it is still inspiring filmmakers to this very day!
"Brazil" Terry Gilliam's dystopian, sci-fi, fantasy, dark comedy mesh was a box office dud that only continues to grow stronger with every passing year! There's at least three different cuts of the film and thankfully the Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-Ray has them all!
"Come And See" Elem Klimov's horrifying anti-war classic that focuses on a teenager fighting in WW2 during the "German occupation of Byelorussia". I think it's more terrifying than any horror film you'll ever see. Not an easy watch, but it's one of the greatest films I've ever seen and it's a film everyone should see at least once!
"After Hours" Martin Scorsese's dark comedy cult classic was dismissed at the time, but like most Scorsese films, it aged like fine wine and is now considered a masterpiece and one of his most underrated films with fans.
"Ran" Akira Kurosawa's masterful adaptation of Shakespeare's "King Lear" an actual 16th century Japanese feudal lord, Mōri Motonari. This was Kurosawa's final epic(and his most expensive) and his fourth to last film!
